Similar to Missouri S&T's Study Abroad program, students also have the opportunity to research abroad. Engaging in research abroad offers a unique opportunity to expand academic inquiry beyond traditional boundaries. By working in international settings, students engaging in research abroad gain access to different resources, diverse perspectives, and build collaborative networks that enrich both research and professional development. These experiences foster critical thinking, cultural thinking, cultural competence, and adaptability, while encouraging innovative approaches to global challenges.
Not only does researching abroad strengthens academic and career pathways, but also promotes meaningful cross-cultural understanding and responsible, ethical engagement with communities worldwide. Preparing students to contribute thoughtfully and effectively in an increasingly interconnected world.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is a summer research program, where students spend 8 - 10 weeks engaging in hands-on research at host institutions. These programs are highly competitive, requiring personal statements, transcripts and letters of recommendations as part of the application process.

AMGEN Scholars Program
The Amgen Scholars Program aims to open the door to research opportunities at 26 host institutions for undergraduates from any four-year college or university in a given region. Made possible through a commitment of more than $80 million since 2006, Amgen Scholars allows undergraduates from across the globe to participate in cutting-edge research opportunities at world-class institutions. 26 premier educational and research institutions across the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada currently host the summer program. Undergraduate participants benefit from undertaking a research project under top faculty, being part of a cohort-based experience of seminars and networking events, and taking part in a symposium in their respective region where they meet their peers, learn about biotechnology, and hear from leading scientists.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, undergraduate students enrolled in accredited four-year colleges or universities in the United States, Puerto Rico or other U.S. territory, sophomores/juniors/non-graduating seniors; cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above, interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. U.S. host institutions include CalTech, Columbia University, Duke University, Harvard University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, UCSF, University of North Carolina, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Washington University, Yale

Undergraduate Research Fellowships
An REU Site typically involves a group of around 10 students who work on related research projects at a host institution based in the United States or sometimes at an international location. At each REU Site, students work closely with faculty and other senior researchers to:
Through an REU Supplement (supplemental funding), faculty or other investigators who hold NSF research grants might also be able to support one or more students to conduct research related to the investigator's NSF-funded research project.
Eligibility: Undergraduate college and university students pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents or U.S. nationals. Individual REU opportunities may have additional criteria for eligibility.
Amount: Varies but includes competitive stipends and in many cases assistance with housing, meals and travel

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program is a 10-week summer research internship for undergraduate and master's students in STEM majors. Participants complete a cutting-edge research project at one of the Department’s National Laboratories or DOE Headquarters in support of the Department of Energy’s Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office. MLEF participants are mentored by DOE scientists and engineers while completing a research project over the course of the summer. At the end of the program, participants present their research findings at the MLEF Technical Forum. During the 10-week appointment, fellows receive a weekly stipend, and may be eligible to receive travel and housing assistance.
Eligibility: must be at least 18, U.S. citizen, GPA of at least 2.8, currently enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a STEM program at an accredited college or university (associate, bachelor's, master's at time of application), college sophomore or higher, completed at least one years as matriculated undergraduate student at time of applying, be available for 10-week summer internship
Amount: undergraduates receive a stipend of $7,500 for the 10-week program; master's students receive a stipend of $8,500 for the 10-week program; some participants may be authorized to receive an additional allowance to offset the cost of housing and travel expenses; the allowance may not cover the full cost of housing or travel to the program site
