Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol

March 13, 2025

Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol is a UM System-wide event in Jefferson City that demonstrates the unique opportunities students have to participate with faculty in undergraduate research at the University of Missouri. Students will assemble in the capitol building rotunda to display research posters and to speak with legislators about their research and how it is significant in addressing the needs of society. This event underscores higher education’s role in developing educated citizens and preparing a work force with the necessary skills to further the economic growth of the state.

Ambassador Expectations

Students selected to serve as Undergraduate Research Ambassadors will be asked to attend planning meetings with Experiential Learning in preparation for the event. Planning meetings will begin in November 2024. Meeting topics will include presentation skills, how the event works, how to meet and greet lawmakers, and other protocol. Students will prepare or revise their poster and abstract for a lay audience, and prepare a brief elevator speach on their work suitable for delivering the “take home message”. Students will also produce a 3 minute video presenation through S&T Media Services that will be showcased on this website. Posters must be printed before the April 13, 2025 event.

Students will visit with lawmakers during their visit to the capitol in March. Parents of Ambassadors will be invited by President Choi to attend the event in Jefferson City. Students will have the opportunity to tour the state capitol and to have their photo taken with their local lawmakers to send to their hometown newspaper. Transportation to and from Jefferson City will be provided, along with a box lunch. Letters explaining the student’s absence from class can be sent to appropriate instructors upon request.
